Compare ELL Accommodations by Category

A total of 104 accommodations were identified in state assessment policies. Of these, 40 are categorized as ELL-responsive and 64 as non-ELL-responsive. This database provides a listing of both types of accommodations. This classification of ELL-responsiveness is intended to draw attention to the linguistic support needed by ELLs when taking a content assessment.

ELL-responsive accommodations are organized by direct and indirect linguistic support. Accommodations providing direct linguistic support involve adjustments to the language of the test. Such accommodations can be provided in the student's native language or in English (Rivera, Collum, Shafer Willner, & Sia, 2006). An indirect linguistic support accommodation consists of extending the time limits of a test to facilitate ELLs’ language processing (Acosta, Rivera, & Shafer Willner, 2008).

Within the database, ELL-responsive accommodations are further classified according to the direct and indirect linguistic support they provide. Accommodations providing direct linguistic support involve adjustments to the language of the test. Such accommodations can be provided in the student's native language or in English (Rivera, Collum, Shafer Willner, & Sia, 2006). An indirect linguistic support accommodation consists of extending the time limits of a test to facilitate ELLs' language processing (Acosta, Rivera, & Shafer Willner, 2008).

The non-ELL-responsive accommodations do not directly support ELLs’ linguistic needs. Non-ELL-responsive accommodations are organized by disabilities support, test administration practices, and other (test administrator qualifications, motivation support, and test preparation support).
